Rules
Roulette is a game of chance. A ball is spun around a numbered wheel; players bet on where it will stop. Place chips on the layout before the dealer calls "no more bets." Winning bets are paid according to the bet type: a straight-up number pays 35:1, red or black pays 1:1, and so on. Losing bets are collected. The house edge comes from the 0 (and 00 in American roulette) — when the ball lands there, outside bets lose.
How to Play
Buy chips from the dealer — roulette uses table-specific chips, not regular casino chips. Place your bets on the layout. Inside bets go on individual numbers or small groups; outside bets cover larger sections (red/black, odd/even, dozens, columns). The dealer spins the wheel and drops the ball. Once the ball lands, the dealer marks the winning number and pays winners. Collect your winnings or leave them for the next spin.
Inside vs Outside Bets
Inside bets offer higher payouts but lower odds. A straight-up bet on a single number pays 35:1 but has a 1-in-38 (American) or 1-in-37 (European) chance of winning. Outside bets — red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36, dozens, columns — pay even money or 2:1 and hit more frequently. They're better for bankroll preservation and longer play.
House Edge Explained
The house edge is built into the payouts. A straight-up bet on American roulette has true odds of 37:1 but pays 35:1 — the difference is the house edge. American roulette's double zero gives the casino a 5.26% edge on most bets. European (single-zero) roulette cuts that to 2.7%. Some casinos offer "La Partage" or "En Prison" rules on even-money bets, which reduce the edge further.
Tips for Beginners
Stick to outside bets until you're comfortable. Avoid the five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) — it has the worst house edge on the table. Look for European or single-zero tables when available. Set a budget; roulette can burn through it quickly. Don't chase losses — the wheel has no memory.
